Sponholz seventh off 1-meter board

OXFORD, Ohio -- Fredonia State junior Kelly Sponholz (Alden) finished seventh Thursday in 1-meter springboard diving at the NCAA Division III Women's Swimming and Diving Championships.

Sponholz scored 424.15 points, just 31 points out of first place in an extremely close competition. She was the second-highest scoring junior in the event, which included 22 divers.

It is the third straight year she earned All-American status in the event. She finished third in 2007.

Sponholz will compete in the 3-meter springboard competition starting Friday. Finals are Saturday. She is pictured here holding her All-American plaque, flanked by head coach Arthur Wang, left, and assistant coach John Crawford.
