Women move into fifth place

BUFFALO, N.Y. The Fredonia State women moved into fifth place after the second day of the SUNYAC Championships at the Flickinger Aquatic Center.

A 42-point swing enabled the Blue Devils to overtake Buffalo State with one day of swimming and diving remaining. Fredonia State has 188 points, Buffalo State 157.

The Fredonia State men remained in eighth place.

The highest placement of the day for the Blue Devils was the women's fifth-place 800-yard relay. Freshman Lexie Chapman (Lockport/Lockport), senior Katie Gordon (Hamburg/Hamburg), sophomore Cassie Austin (Cuba/Cuba-Rushford), and freshman Alison Eckert (Eden/Eden) were clocked in 8:18.79.

The same women -- in order, Eckert, Chapman, Gordon, and Austin -- finished sixth in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:56.24.

Also, Eckert finished eighth in the 100-yard backstroke. Her preliminary time was 1:03.35.

All three times -- the two relays and Eckert's backstroke time -- established new school records.

For the men, the Blue Devils had two relays in the scoring.

The 800-yard freestyle relay quartet of freshman Cyrus Salehi (Fairport/Fairport), junior Chris Oaks (Macedon/Palmyra-Macedon), sophomore Ben Farley (Angola/Lake Shore), and freshman Eric Wilson (Syracuse/Manlius Pebble Hill) finished seventh in 7:40.88.

Also, the 200-yard medley relay team of Wilson, freshman Andrew Wilmore (Derby/Lake Shore), junior Kengo Yamata (Ashikaga, Japan/Tochigi), and Salehi were eighth in 1:47.09.

In addition, Oaks cuts 21 seconds off his previous best in the 400-yard individual medley.

Preliminaries Saturday are at 10 a.m., with finals 6 p.m., at the Burt Flickinger Aquatic Center in Buffalo.
