Bennett fifth in Golden Flash 5K

KENT, Ohio -- Fredonia State sophomore Jessica Bennett (Rochester/West Irondequoit) finished fifth Friday in the 5,000 meters on the first day of the Kent State Golden Flash Gala.

Bennett was clocked 18:22.67 and finished ahead of 25 other runners, including former teammate and 2007 graduate Rachel McNamara, who was sixth place just under three seconds behind.

In other events, junior Julia Hopson (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) was 12th in the women's 20-pound weight throw. Her best throw of the competition measured 49' 4 1/2".

On the men's side, sophomore Mike Kelley (Geneseo) was ninth in the triple jump with a top effort of 42' 1 1/2".

The meet, the first of the season, resumes Saturday at 10 a.m.
