Woman thrower on NCAA provisional list

KENT, Ohio -- Fredonia State sophomore Julia Hopson (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) wasted little time getting her name on the NCAA championship provisional qualifiers list.

In the first competition of the indoor season, Hopson threw the 20-pound weight to a distance of 15.29 meters during the Golden Flash Gala at Kent State University. It was an NCAA provisional mark as well as a qualifying throw for the SUNYAC, New York Collegiate Track Conference, and the ECAC meets later this winter.

Also competing Friday for the Fredonia State women were four distance runners and a pole vaulter. Freshman Jessica Bennett (Rochester/West Irondequoit) had the Devils' top time in the women's 5,000 meters with a sixth-place 18:33, the third best time in school history. Moving to fourth on the lists was senior Rachel McNamara (Lakeview/Nardin Academy) with 18:38, while junior Samantha Ellwood (Hamburg/Hamburg) and Kristen Rohne (Queensbury/Queensbury) ran personal-bests in the event. Bennett and McNamara qualified for the SUNYAC and NYSCTC meets.

Senior Erin Ross (Amherst/Amherst) clearned 9'0" in the pole vault.

On the men's side, freshman Tom Williams (Queensbury/Queensbury) ran a SUNYAC and state meet 5,000-meter qualifying time of 15:42, while two throwers qualified for the same two meets in the 35-pound weight throw with personal-bests: senior Nick Lord (Skaneateles/Skaneateles) with a toss of 13.48 meters, and senior Tim Miller (Cheektowaga/St. Mary's) with 13.29 meters. Freshman Steve Scherer (Hamburg/Frontier) tossed 11.06 meters in his first collegiate meet.
