SUNYAC qualifiers at RIT meet

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Three more Blue Devils added their names to the SUNYAC qualifying list while competing Friday at the RIT Invitational.

Senior distance runner Kevin Buzzelli (Grand Island/Grand Island) made the SUNYAC standard in the men's 5,000 meters with a time of 16:08, while senior Brent Rose (Kenoza Lake/Sullivan West) and freshman Steve Scherer (Hamburg/Frontier) qualfied in field events. Rose was measured at 6.21 meters -- nearly 21 feet -- in the long jump and finished second in the event. Scherer threw the 35-pound weight a distance of 12.40 meters.

The meet also included personal-bests by Blue Devils. Sophomore hurdler Andrew Power (Bloomfield/Victor) was clocked in 8.30 seconds in a 55-meter hurdles preliminary; he was fifth in the final. Junior sprinter Brett Csont (Dunkirk/Dunkirk) had a personal-best 6.69 seconds in the 55-meter dash. Also in the 55 meters, freshman Greg Jackson (Sherman/Sherman) was tuned ub 6.95 seconds, 1/100th of a second off the SUNYAC qualifying time.

For the women, freshman Allyssa Kline (Newark/Newark) had a personal-best of 9.85 seconds in the 55-meter hurdles.

Other top performances were turned in by senior Erin Ross (Amherst/Amherst), second in the women's pole vault with a clearance of 9' 4"; senior Nick Lord (Skaneateles/Skaneateles), a fourth-place finish in the 35-pound weight throw, with 15.38 meters; and sophomore Zak Wallace (Stanley/Geneva), also in the weight throw, with a toss of 11.61 meters.

Five Blue Devils also competed Friday at the New Balance Collegiate Invtiational in New York City.

Junior distance runner Samantha Ellwood (Hamburg/Hamburg) was 22nd in the women's 5,000 meters with a time of 19:42.65. In the men's 5,000, senior Andy Forma (Elma/St. Francis) was 20th in 15:46.57 while freshman Tom Williams (Queensbury/Queensbury) was right behind in 21st with a time of 15:47.18.

The women's distance medley relay quartet of freshman Jessica Bennett (Rochester/West Irondequoit), Ellwood, sophomore Trisha Ippolito (Angola/Lake Shore), and senior Rachel McNamara (Lakeview/Nardin Academy) was 13th in 12:57.20. McNamara also competed in the women's 800 meters and turned in a time of 2:26.29, 10th in her section.

The meet resumes Saturday at The Armory Track and Field Center.
