Hopson doubles; Smith, Brett pull upsets

GENEVA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State women won four individual SUNYAC titles at the conference championship meet Saturday.

For the second straight year, Julia Hopson (Poughkeepsie/Arlington), a junior, was a double champ. She defended her titles in the women's weight throw and the shot put. Her 16.34 meter weight throw set a meet record, while her winning shot was measured at 12.21 meters.

The other Blue Devils pulled upsets. In the 400 meters, senior Nicole C. Smith (Amherst) took first in 61.14 seconds. She entered the meet as the No. 8 seed in the event. Meanwhile, freshman Kate Brett (Webster/Webster-Schroeder) convincingly won the 55-meter hurdles in a season-best 8.79 seconds. She was the No. 4 seed heading into the meet, held at Hobart and William Smith Colleges.

Fredonia State's other points in the women's meet came from sophomore Jackie Majka (Depew), third in the high jump; and fifth-place finishes by the distance medley relay and the 4-by-400 meter relay. The Blue Devils finished fifth in team scoring, up two places from 2007.

On the men's side, three Blue Devils earned points. Sophomore Tom Williams (Queensbury) was third in the 3,000 meters in 8:52.74; junior Geoffrey Lesch-Wragge (Fredonia) was third in the 800 meters in 1:56.16; and sophomore Michael Kelley (Geneseo) was eighth in the triple jump at 13.15 meters.

The Blue Devils are scheduled to compete at the New York State Collegiate Track Conference championship meet next Friday and Saturday at St. Lawrence University.
