Hopson claims NYSCTC title in weight throw

CANTON, N.Y. -- Fredonia State junior Julia Hopson (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) won the women's 20-pound weight throw at the New York State Collegiate Track Conference championship meet.

Hopson's winning throw was measured at 16.31 meters, which converts to 53 feet, 6 1/4 inches. In the process, she earned 10 points for her team.

The Blue Devil women ended Day 1 of the meet with 24 points, fifth in the team standings. Six points came from the 4-by-200 meter relay quartet of freshman Kate Brett (Webster/Webster-Schroeder), senior Nicole C. Smith (Amherst), freshman Madeline Bensley (Albion), and sophomore Laura Dickerman (Corning/Corning-Painted Post West). They set a school record with a time of 1:47.70 and finished third in the championship.

Senior distance runner Samantha Ellwood (Hamburg) earned five points with a fourth-place finish in the 5,000 meters. Her time of 18:57.49 was a personal improvement of 15 seconds. The final three Blue Devil points Friday were scored by sophomore Jackie Majka (Depew) for her sixth-place finish in the high jump. Majka cleared 1.53 meters (5 feet, 1/4 inch).

In preliminary races, Brett was second in the 55-meter high hurdles and Smith fourth in the 400 meters with times of 8.83 seconds and 60.44 seconds, respectively. Smith's time was a personal-best. In addition, sophomore Allyssa Kline (Newark) had a PR in the 55 hurdles, while Dickerman and sophomore Rhea Williams (Windsor) did likewise in the 400. The finals in both events are Saturday.

On the men's side, senior Justin Schwab (Killbuck/Salamanca) was fourth in the high jump with a clearance of 1.92 meters (6 feet, 3 1/2 inches), while sophomore Tom Williams (Queensbury) was fifth in the 5,000 meters with a personal-best 15:16.33. Together they accounted for the Blue Devils' nine points, ninth in the team standings.

The meet concludes Saturday at St. Lawrence University.
