Devils open outdoor season at Wake Forest

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Fredonia State's track and field teams opened its 2008 outdoor season Friday at the Wake Forest Invitational.

It was a record-setting day in the shot put for junior Julia Hopson (Pougkeepsie/Arlington). She finished eighth in a field of 48 women with a throw of 12.91 meters, which converts to 42 feet, 4.25 inches, a new Fredonia State women's mark.

Other top performances by Fredonia State women: senior Nicole C. Smith (Amherst), 29th out of 56 in the 400 meters with a personal-best of 1:00.09; and sophomore Jessica Wooten (West Henrietta/Rush-Henrietta), and junior Trisha Ippolito (Angola/Lake Shore), 2:28.08 and 2:28.26, respectively, in the 800 meters.

On the men's side, senior Justin Schwab (Killbuck/Salamanca) was third in his high jump flight by clearing 1.92 meters, or 6 feet, 3 1/2 inches. Meanwhile, freshman Nick Guarino (Bergen/Byron-Bergen) posted a time of 15:55.82 in the 5,000 meters, while four men turned solid times in the 800 meters. Geoff Lesch-Wragge (Fredonia) led the quartet in 1:54.87, followed by sophomore Rob Rappole (Bemus Point/Maple Grove) in 1:59.41, freshman Dave "Mac" McMahill (Hemlock/Livonia) in 1:59.41, and junior Joe Vella (Hamburg) in 2:01.68

The Blue Devils will compete in the event Saturday.
