Hopson wins weight throw, Lesch-Wragge fifth

BOSTON, Mass. -- Fredonia State junior Julia Hopson (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) defended her 20-pound weight throw title Saturday at the ECAC championship meet at Harvard University.

Ranked No. 3 in the nation in the event, Hopson matched her lifetime-best throw -- and SUNYAC record -- with a toss of 17.41 meters. She also had two other throws over 17 meters and won the event by over two feet over Vantiel Elizabeth Duncan of Bates College, who was the No. 1 seed in the meet. Both women will compete next weekend at the NCAA Division III championships at Ohio Northern.

Also Saturday, junior Geoffrey Lesch-Wragge (Fredonia) ran a lifetime-best 1:53.56 in the 800 meters and provisionally qualified for the NCAA D-III meet. Lesch-Wragge finished fifth after starting the day as the ninth seed. His previous best this season was 1:55.53 while his previous lifetime-best came while winning the New York State outdoor title as a high school senior. The official NCAA entry list will be announced early next week.
