Women throwers win Nazareth events

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Two Fredonia State women throwers won their events on an otherwise dismal day at the Nazareth Invitational.

In the javelin, senior Meredith Schichtel (Hamburg/Frontier) threw a personal-best of 111' 5", good for first place.

The shot put victory went to freshman Julia Hopson (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) with a winning toss of 35' 10."

Several Blue Devils made the trip but were idled by the weather. With the SUNYAC Championships next weekend, head coaches Paul Csont and Nolan Swanson scratched athletes who had already qualfied for SUNYACs and the New York State Collegiate Track Conference meets rather than risk injury on a cold, wet day.

"Most of the other coaches," Csont said, "were pulling athletes left and right, too. Everybody has their conference championships coming up."

The SUNYAC meet, hosted by Brockport, starts Friday at 2 p.m. The NYSCTC Championships are May 5-6 at Hartwick College.
