Three women with NYSCTC titles

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Three Fredonia State women won events Friday at the New York State Collegiate Track Conference meet.

In the long jump, sophomore Jackie Majka (Depew) soared 5.35 meters, which converts to 17’ 6 ¾”, while junior Julia Hopson (Poughkeepsie) had a winning hammerthrow of 50 meters, which converts to 164’.

In the 10,000 meters, senior Samantha Ellwood (Hamburg) was clocked in 39:09.78, an improvement of 36 seconds from her qualifying time.

In the women's 400-meter trials, senior Nicole C. Smith (Amherst) ran the day's fourth fastest time, a personal-best 60.03 seconds. Also, freshman Kate Brett (Webster/Webster-Schroeder) won her 100-meter hurdles heat in a time of 15.49 seconds.

Each woman who won earned 10 team points for their victories. With 30 points after six scored events, the Blue Devils are in fourth place in the team standings.

The Blue Devil men were shut out Friday, although junior Aaron Borowczyk (Fredonia/Forestville) ran a personal-best 23,28 seconds in the 200-meter trials. He did not qualify for finals.

The meet – at Fauver Stadium at the University of Rochester – resumes Saturday.
