Majka wins second event at NYSCTC meet

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Sophomore Jackie Majka (Depew) won the women's high jump at the New York State Collegiate Track Conferenece championship meet at the University of Rochester's Fauver Stadium.

Majka cleared 1.76 meters, which converts to 5' 5 3/4" and provisionally qualified her for the NCAA championships. It was her second NYSCTC title in as many days. She won the women's long jump on Friday.

A state champ Friday in the women's hammerthrow, junior Julia Hopson (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) finished second Saturday in the women's shot put with a throw of 12.31 meters, which converts to 40' 4 3/4".

Also Saturday, senior Nicole C. Smith (Amherst) finished fourth in the 400 meters with a personal-best 59.42 seconds, while freshman Hailey Guard (Youngstown/Lewiston-Porter) ran a personal-best 2:26.05 in the 800 meters. The Blue Devil women finished sixth in the team standings with 59 points. Fourteen teams scored in the meet.

On the men's side, the Blue Devils scored 11 points over the two days, Freshman Josh Guarino (Bergen/Byron-Bergen) finished third in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:34.81, senior Justin Schwab (Killbuck/Salamanca) cleared 6' 2" to tie for fifth in the men's high jump, and freshman Nick Guarino (Bergen/Byron-Bergen) was seventh in the 800 meters in 1:57.29.

Also, junior Aaron Borowczyk (Fredonia/Forestville) ran a personal-best 23.28 seconds in the 200 meters.
