Five Blue Devils named to All-SUNYAC team

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Five Fredonia State student-athletes -- three women and two men -- have been named to the 2008 SUNYAC Outdoor Track and Field all-conference team.

The women's team includes two Fredonia State First Team choices, junior Julia Hopson (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) and freshman Kate Brett (Webster/Webster-Schroeder). Sophomore Jackie Majka (Depew) is a Second Team choice.

The men's Second Team choices are junior Geoff Lesch-Wragge (Fredonia) and freshman Josh Guarino (Bergen/Byron-Bergen).

Hopson earned her second straight SUNYAC Women's Field Athlete of the Year following first-place performances in the women's hammerthrow and the women's shot put at the conference championship meet April 25-26. Her hammerthrow of 53.63 meters set a meet record and automatically qualified her for the NCAA championships. It was the third straight year she was the SUNYAC champ, while it was her second straight year winning the shot put, this year with an NCAA provisional qualifying effort of 12.92 meters.

Brett also had a record-setting weekend at the SUNYAC meet, held at SUNY Cortland. She won the 100-meter high hurdles in 14.96 seconds, a new facility record and second-fastest ever by a Blue Devil woman. Her second-place time of 1:04.07 in the 400-meter hurdles set a new school record in the event. Both times were NCAA provisional qualifiers.

Majka finished second at SUNYACs in the long jump with a season-best 5.27 meters (a distance she exceeded in the more recent New York State Collegiate Track Conference championship meet). She was also third in the high jump and sixth in the triple jump at the SUNYAC meet.

Lesch-Wragge earned his All-SUNYAC honor by virtue of his second-place finish in the 800 meters with a time of 1:55.65, while Guarino was second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a personal-best 9:40.47. Like Majka in the long jump, Guarino improved upon his SUNYAC time at the NYSCTC meet last weekend.
