Last chance for non-qualifiers

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Friday night marks the end of the regular season for indoor track and field at Fredonia State as the Blue Devils travel to Baldwin-Wallace University.

For those not yet qualified, it’s the last meet to qualify for the SUNYAC Championships, a week from Saturday at Hobart. It’s also the last weekend to qualify for the New York State Collegiate Track Conference championship meet in the 500 meters and the 1000 meters; those events are no longer contested at the SUNYAC meet.

Non-qualified athletes looking for the SUNYAC standard that have been very close this season include freshman Greg Jackson (Sherman/Sherman) and freshman Allyssa Kline (Newark/Newark) in the 55 meters. Jackson's best time is 6.95 seconds and the standard for men is 6.94. Kline's best of 8.09 seconds is short of the women's standard of 8.04.

Two sophomores, Matt Callegari (Orchard Park/Orchard Park) and Joe Vella (Hamburg/Hamburg), competing in the 800 meters, and senior Kevin Buzzelli (Grand Island/Grand Island) in the mile all stand a decent chance of getting the qualifiers of 2:03.24 and 4:37.04. Sophomore Matthew Wysocki (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) will take a shot at the state standard in the 1,000 meters.

Other men looking for a qualifier include juniors Dave Radomski (Sloan/John F. Kennedy) and Adam Frisbee (Cossayuna/Greenwich) in the jumps. On the women's side, freshman Sara Palmiero (Kenmore/Kenmore West) in the 55-meter hurdles, freshman Heather Hoffmann (Cheektowaga/Cleveland Hill) in the jumps, and sophomore Stephanie Bishop (Chittenango/Chittenango) in the 20-pound weight throw will look to become SUNYAC qualifiers.
