Devils rally past Geneseo in pool play

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State rallied from two games down to defeat Geneseo, 3-2, in the final Friday night match of SUNYAC West Division Pool Play.

Geneseo won the first two games, 30-26 and 30-17, before the Blue Devils (21-11, 6-1 SUNYAC) began their comeback with a 30-27 victory. They roared to a 30-12 win in the fourth game before taking the fifth, 15-13.

Senior middle blocker JaHanna Dixon (Hamburg/Frontier) had team-highs in kills with 18 and digs with 21. Junior outside hitter Leanne Maloney (West Seneca/Mt. Mercy) added 14 kills and also had 21 digs, while junior outside hitter Amy Bertrando (Westfield) and freshman middle blocker Kaitlin Erdmann (Randolph) had 10 kills each. Junior setter Alyssa Torpy (West Henrietta/Rish-Henrietta) was the top playmaker with 47 assists.

In the first match of the day, the Devils Devils took down Morrisville State 30-22, 30-17 and 30-21 to post their 20th victory, the sixth time Geoff Braun's nine seasons as coach they reached or surpassed the total.

In that win, Maloney had 12 kills and 15 digs, while Dixon had eight kills and eight digs to go along with four service aces. Freshman defensive specialist Danielle McNeil (West Seneca/St. Mary's) had six service aces.

Pool play continues Saturday at 10 a.m. in Dods Hall with the Devils slated for three more matches: noon vs. Buffalo State, 4 p.m. vs. Oswego, and 6 p.m vs. Brockport in a rematch of a Sept. 21 match won by Brockport.
