Home, sweep home

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State swept Brockport 3-0 in the final match of SUNYAC Pool Play Saturday afternoon to close out a perfect 5-0 weekend in Dods Hall and claim the SUNYAC West Division regular season title.

The Devils also claimed 3-0 victories over Buffalo State and Oswego earlier in the day.

The Devils had completed the first round of Pool Play on Sept. 21-22 at Geneseo with a 4-1 mark, second to Brockport, who finished 5-0. This weekend, The Devils sported the perfect 5-0 ledger while Brockport finished 4-1.

Both squads finished 9-1 in SUNYAC play with their losses coming against each other. The Devils claim the West Division title by virtue of the tie breaker, winning percentage in head-to-head games. The Devils victory over Brockport was 3-0. Brockport needed five games to down the Devils, 3-2.

Against Brockport on Saturday, Kaitlin Erdmann (Randolph) led the offense with 14 kills. JaHanna Dixon (Hamburg/Frontier) had 12 kills while Amy Bertrando (Westfield) chipped in 10 kills. Alyssa Torpy (West Henrietta/Rish-Henrietta) set up the Devil offense with 39 assists. Fredonia St. won by scores of 30-28, 30-28, 30-22.

Against Buffalo State, Dixon led the team with 13 kills. Leanne Maloney (West Seneca/Mt. Mercy) had 5 service aces and 12 digs, as the Devils cruised to 30-17, 30-21, 30-12 wins.

Against Oswego, Torpy had 6 service aces and 35 assists. Dixon had 19 digs and Erdmann had a team-high 11 kills. The Devils won 30-19, 30-26, 30-17.

The Blue Devils also notched their 24th victory of the season, tieing the school mark previoulsy reached in 2003 and 1997. Overall, the team stands at 24-11.

Other participants in Pool Play were: Geneseo 3-2, Oswego 2-3, Buffalo State 1-4 and Morrisville St. 0-5.

The Devils play Washington and Jefferson College and Westminster next Saturday before advancing the the SUNYAC Tournament the first weekend of Nov.
