Devils defeat Buffalo State, Oswego in pool play

OSWEGO, N.Y. -- Fredonia State opened the second round of SUNYAC Western Division Pool Play with a 3-0 win Friday over Buffalo State.

The Blue Devils (23-7, 4-2 SUNYAC) followed that win up with a 3-2 victory over Oswego later Friday night.

Sophomore outside hitter JaHanna Dixon (Hamburg/Frontier) had 14 kills and freshman outside hitter Amy Bertrando (Westfield/Westfield) had 13 in the Blue Devils' 30-15, 30-21, and 30-14 win over Buffalo State.

Both women were proficient hitters. Dixon made only two errors, Bertrando just four. They had hitting percentages of .545 and .346, respectively.

Senior Traci Pieczynski (Lancaster/St. Mary's) was credited with 25 assists and five service aces. Senior middle hitter Elizabeth Schaller (Marilla/St. Mary's) had six aces.

Sophomore defensive specialist-outside hitter Paula Baire (Lancaster/Nardin) collected a team-high seven digs.

Against Oswego, Dixon had 22 kills and junior middle hitter Stephanie DeGolier (Cassadaga/Cassadaga Valley) added 16 kills in Fredonia State's 29-31, 30-21, 24-30, 30-16, and 15-11 win.

Baire led the team with 22 digs, freshman outside hitter Bethany Kibbe (San Antonio, Texas/John Marshall) collected 21 digs and eight kills, and Pieczynski had another 48 assists.

The Blue Devils face Brockport (noon) and Geneseo (2 p.m.) on Saturday with a chance to win 24 matches for the second time in the history in the program. The 2003 team was 24-12.
