Devils tie school record for wins

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State tied a school record for wins in a season with a 3-1 victory Saturday over Vassar College.

The 30-20, 15-30, 30-23, 34-32 victory by the Blue Devils (24-11) came in the first round of the New York State Women's Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament at Ithaca College.

New York University defeated Fredonia State, 3-0, in a quarterfinal match later Saturday.

By winning Saturday morning, the Blue Devils matched the 2003 team's school record of 24 wins. In addition, the 2005 team's .686 winning percentage currently stands as the best ever by a Blue Devil team dating back to the 1985 season.

The victory over Vassar also ended a three-match losing streak by the Blue Devils.

Freshman outside hitter Amy Bertrando (Westfield/Westfield) was the top hitter with 13 kills, while three teammates had nine kills each: senior middle hitter JaHanna Dixon (Hamburg/Frontier), junior middle hitter Stephanie DeGolier (Cassadaga/Cassadaga Valley), and senior outside hitter Liz Schaller (Marilla/St. Mary's). Schaller also had five blocks, and freshman outside hitter Bethany Kibbe (San Antonio, Texas/John Marshall) had 5 service aces and 18 digs.

In addition, sophomore defensive specialist Allyson Strein (Mineola/Mineola) broke the school service ace record held by teammate, senior setter Traci Pieczynski (Marilla/St. Mary's), while Pieczynski broke her own school record for assists in a season.

In their second match Saturday, the Blue Devils were facing the No. 1 seed in the tournament and the No. 4 ranked team in NCAA Division III. In addition, the Violets (27-5) are ranked No. 1 in the New York Region.

NYU won the match by scores of 30-24, 30-15, and 30-19.

Dixon and DeGolier had 6 kills each, Kibbe collected 18 digs, Strein added 13 digs and 2 more aces (she has 70 this season), and Pieczynski added 23 assists to her school record (currently 1,285). The Blue Devils meet Clarkson in a fifth-place match at noon Sunday.
