Cortland ousts Blue Devils from SUNYAC play

BROCKPORT, N.Y. -- Fredonia State's season came to an end with a 3-2 loss to Cortland in the first round of the SUNYAC Tournament.

Cortland (26-12) advances to play host SUNY Brockport Friday at 3 p.m. in one semifinal matchup. The other semifinal will feature New Paltz against the winner of the Geneseo/Oneonta match.

The Red Dragons came from behind for a 32-30 victory in game one but the Blue Devils (16-16) rallied for wins in games two and three by scores of 30-21 and 30-28 to take a 2-1 lead. The Red Dragons took control of the match in game four, winning a 30-16 game and then dominated the fifth game winning 15-5.

In game one, the Blue Devils jumped out to a 12-6 lead but Cortland chipped away at the lead to close within three points at 16-13 but Fredonia rallied again for a 21-16 lead but with the score 25-20, Cortland scored five straight points with Kelsey Muka holding serve for the run. The teams traded points until a Muka kill and a block by Alice Kahrs made it a 30-20 Cortland lead and the Red Dragons went on to post the 32-30 win.

Amy Bertrando (Westfield/Westfield) led the Blue Devils with 16 kills in the match and helped the team to a pair of wins in games two and three. Sophomore Val Grell (Lancaster/Lancaster) had three aces and 25 digs.

Alyssa Torpy (West Henrietta/Rush-Henrietta) had 43 assists, 10 digs and four blocks for Fredonia.
