Devils drop heartbreaker in SUNYAC title match

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Fredonia State's bid to win its first SUNYAC championship in volleyball ended with a heartbreaking 3-1 loss to host Cortland.

The Blue Devils (26-13) won the first game of the match, 30-24, only to have Cortland (31-10) win the next three by two-point margins: 30-28, 32-30, and 32-30.

The teams were the No. 1 seeds in their respective divisions, the Blue Devils in the West, Cortland in the East. The Red Dragons were the home team by virute of a pre-determined East-West annual rotation.

The Blue Devils' top hitters were junior Amy Bertrando (Westfield) with 20 kills, senior JaHanna Dixon (Hamburg/Frontier) with 16, and junior Leanne Maloney (West Seneca/Mount Mercy) with 12. In addition, Bertrando had eight digs, Dixon 20 digs and three blocks, and Maloney 21 digs and two blocks.

Fredonia State's top server was sophomore Jessica Karan (Orchard Park) with seven service aces, to go along with 14 digs. Danielle McNeil (West Seneca/St. Mary's), a freshman, had two service aces and 11 digs, and junior Val Grell (Lancaster) had one service ace and five digs. Another freshman, Jenna Tatu (Tonawanda/Kenmore West), collected a team-high four blocks plus six kills, while junior Alyssa Torpy (West Henrietta/Rush-Henrietta) was credited with 53 assists and 10 digs.

Bertrando and Dixon were named to the all-tournament team. Dixon was playing in her final collegiate match barring an NCAA at-large bid.
