Women's Volleyball

New Paltz downs Devils

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- New Paltz earned a spot in the SUNYAC semifinals for the first time since 1999 with a three-game sweep over Fredonia State, thus eliminating the Devils in day one of the SUNYAC Tournament.

Fredonia State (24-13) was led by freshman outside hitter Amy Bertrando's (Westfield) 12 kills. Sophomore outside hitter JaHanna Dixon (Hamburg/Frontier) and senior middle hitter Elizabeth Schaller (Marilla/St. Mary's) finished with 11 kills apiece.

Junior middle hitter Stephanie Degolier (Cassadaga/Cassadaga Valley) added seven kills, senior setter Traci Pieczynski (Lancaster/St. Mary's) totaled 41 assists and sophomore defensive specialist Allyson Strein (Mineola) registered a team-best 12 digs.

Senior outside hitter Andrea Kaiser (Blue Point/Bayport-Blue Point) led a balanced New Paltz attack with 10 kills and a .318 attack percentage. Junior outside hitter Kim Clouston (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) added nine kills and 12 digs, senior Christina Mazurowski (Tonawanda/Kenmore East) contributed seven kills and a team-high eight blocks, and sophomore middle hitter Kim Braga (Long Beach) finished with six kills.

Senior libero Christina Butcher (North Salem) led the Hawks with 17 digs and sophomore Katie Becofsky (Altamont/Schalmont) recorded 33 assists, seven digs and three blocks.

The Hawks (28-10) will play Brockport on Saturday at 1:30 p.m., with the championship match set for 4 p.m.
