Women's Volleyball

Devils go 1-2 on opening day

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Fredonia State defeated Monclair State and fell to Skidmore and host Cortland on the first day of the Red Dragon Classic.

Sophomore Amy Bertrando (Westfield/Westfield) collected 12 kills and sophomore Alyssa Torpy (West Henrietta/Henrietta-Rush) had 30 assists and 10 digs in a 30-15, 30-17, 30-14 win over Montclair State.

Sophomore Leanne Maloney (West Seneca/Mount Mercy) added six kills and junior Paula Baire (Lancaster/Nardin) had six digs.

The season opened with a 23-30, 24-30, 7-30 loss to Skidmore. In that match, Bertrando had 10 kills, junior JaHanna Dixon (Hamburg/Frontier) nine kills, Torpy 30 assists, and Maloney 13 digs.

In the nightcap of three matches, Bertrando and Maloney along with senior Stephanie Degolier (Cassadaga/Cassadaga Valley) collected eight kills each, Torpy was credited with 38 assists, and sophomore Val Grell (Lancaster/Lancaster) had 22 digs.

The Blue Devils return to action Saturday at Cortland.
