Win over SUNYAC foes good for seventh

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Fredonia State defeated Geneseo, 3-1, in the seventh-place match of the Rochester Institute of Technology Tournament.

Sophomore outside hitter Amy Bertrando (Westfield/Westfield) completed a stellar game at the net for the Blue Devils (9-6) with 17 kills in the 30-24, 22-30, 30-20, 30-18 victory.

Bertrando had 40 kills earlier in the day as the Blue Devils fell in four games to the University of Rochester by scores of 23-30, 30-27, 24-30, and 34-36.

Against Geneseo, junior outside hitter JaHanna Dixon had 12 kills, five digs, and two blocks. Sophomore defensive specialist Val Grell (Lancaster/Lancaster) had 21 digs and five service aces, sophomore outside hitter Leanne Maloney (West Seneca/Mt. Mercy) collected 17 digs, and sophomore setter Alyssa Torpy (West Henrietta/Rush-Henrietta) was credited with 35 assists.

The same two teams will meet again during SUNYAC West Division Pool Play at Buffalo State 4 p.m. next Friday.

Torpy had 64 assists in the 3-1 loss to Rochester. Maloney added 16 kills and 29 digs, while Dixon had 10 kills, three service aces, and three blocks.
