Women's Volleyball

Devils split four pool-play matches

GENESEO, N.Y. -- Fredonia State won two matches and lost two matches during SUNYAC West Division Pool Play on Friday and Saturday.

The Blue Devils (13-5, 2-2 SUNYAC) were 1-1 each day with wins coming over Oswego (3-0) and Buffalo State (3-0), and losses to Brockport (3-2) and Geneseo (3-1).

In the loss to Brockport on Friday, freshman outside hitter Bethany Kibbe (San Antonio, Texas/John Marshall) had 26 kills, 23 digs, and 2 aces – all team highs. Senior setter Traci Pieczynski (Lancaster/St. Mary's) was the top playmaker with 67 assists, and contributed 2 aces and 7 digs. Freshman outside hitter Amy Bertrando (Westfield/Westfield) added 16 kills; senior middle hitter Elizabeth Schaller (Marilla/St. Mary’s) 12 kills and 5 blocks; and freshman outside hitter Tonja Royce (Forestville/Forestville) 5 blocks.

The Blue Devils bounced back Friday night with a 3-0 win over Oswego, led again by Kibbe with 15 kills and 11 digs; and Pieczynski with 35 assists, 4 aces, 6 kills, and 5 digs. Sophomore defensive specialist Paula Baire (Lancaster/Nardin) added 10 digs; Liz Schaller 8 kills and 2 blocks; and junior middle hitter Stephanie DeGolier (Cassadaga/Cassadaga Valley) 8 kills and 6 digs.

Against Buffalo State on Saturday morning, freshman outside hitter Katie Schaller (Marilla/St. Mary’s) had a weekend-high 11 service aces. In addition, sophomore outside-middle hitter JaHanna Dixon (Hamburg/Frontier) had a team-high 13 kills. Kibbe added 10 kills and 11 digs, and Liz Schaller 9 kills. Pieczynski earned 29 assists over two games, and freshman setter Alyssa Torpy (West Henrietta/Rush-Henrietta) had 13 assists in one game.

Liz Schaller had 12 kills, DeGolier had 11, and each woman had 2 blocks vs. Geneseo in the Blue Devils’ final match of the weekend. Sophomore defensive specialist Allyson Strein (Mineola/Mineola) was credited with 16 digs, while Pieczynski recorded 46 assists and 5 digs.

The second round of Western Division Pool Play is Oct. 21-22 at Oswego. The Blue Devils return to competition Sept. 28 at Nazareth College.
