Devils bump Mavericks, spike Bethany,
set sights on Tournament title

ERIE, Pa. -- The Fredonia State volleyball team collected a pair of wins at the Penn State Behrend Tournament on Friday. The Devils defeated Medaille in five sets (20-30, 30-16, 30-21,30-26,15-6), followed by a 3-0 (30-25, 30-24, 30-17) sweep of Bethany.

Sophomore outside hitter Amy Bertrando (Westfield/Westfield) led the Blue Devils offense versus Medaille with 23 kills.

Also contributing in the first match was sophomore setter Alyssa Torpy (West Henrietta/Rush-Henrietta) with 40 assists. Leanne Maloney (West Seneca/Mount Mercy) had 18 digs, while Paula Baire (Lancaster/Nardin) had 14 digs.

Bertrando again led with 23 kills versus Bethany. Maloney had 17 digs, Val Grell (Lancaster/Lancaster) had 15 digs and Torpy was credited with 35 assists. Stephanie Degolier (Cassadaga/Cassadaga Valley) registered four blocks.

Penn State Behrend was also 2-0 on the day with wins over D'Youville and Kenyon. Bethany, 1-1 on the day, defeated D'Youville (0-2) in its other match. Kenyon (1-1) defeated Medaille (0-2) in the final match of Friday's action.

The Blue Devils (5-3 overall) take on Kenyon and Penn State at Noon and 2 p.m., respectively, Saturday afternoon.
