Devils own share of Western Division lead

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – There's a three-way tie atop the SUNYAC Western Division standings --- and the Fredonia State Blue Devils are part of it.

The Blue Devils (13-6, 3-1), Geneseo and Brockport all emerged with 3-1 conference records following the first of two pool-play weekends. Those three teams plus Buffalo State (1-3) and Oswego (0-4) will meet again Oct. 22-23 at Fredonia State.

Fredonia State nearly swept the weekend action, only to drop a hard-fought 3-2 decision to Geneseo at noon Saturday. The Blue Devils bounced back by downing Buffalo State, 3-2, while Brockport topped Geneseo, 3-0, to forge the three-way tie.

The Blue Devils defeated Oswego and Brockport on Friday night.

Senior middle hitter Heather Martin (Allegany/Allegany-Limestone) was Fredonia State's leader in both Saturday matches. She had 22 kills, 17 digs, and nine blocks in the heartbreaking 30-18, 28-30, 30-27, 29-31, 16-14 loss to Genseso. Junior middle hitter Elizabeth Schaller (Marilla/St. Mary's) added 11 kills, three digs, and one block while freshman defensive specialist Paula Baire (Lancaster/Nardin) had a team-high 23 digs.

Against Buffalo State, Martin paced the 30-17, 19-30, 24-30, 30-20, 15-13 comeback victory with 23 kills, 14 digs, and four blocks. Junior setter Traci Pieczynski (Lancaster/St. Mary's) was the top playmaker with 40 assists.

Next competition for the Blue Devils is Tuesday at home against Allegheny.
