Volleyball

Devils win twice during pool play

FREDONIA, N.Y. – Fredonia State won both its matches Friday during SUNYAC Western Division Pool Play at Dods Hall.

The Blue Devils (20-10, 5-1) defeated Oswego, 3-0, in the 8 p.m. match after topping Geneseo, 3-1, earlier in the day.

In the 30-21, 30-27 and 30-22 victory over Oswego, freshman JaHanna Dixon (Hamburg/Fronter) connected for 11 kills and senior Heather Martin (Allegany/Allegany-Limestone) had nine kills.

Freshman Allyson Strein (Mineola/Mineola) had a team-high 11 digs, Martin had eight, and junior Traci Pieczynski (Lancaster/St. Mary's) had nine digs, a team-high 31 assists, and seven kills. Martin led the Devils with five blocks.

Against Geneseo, the Blue Devils took the first and second games (31-29 and 30-27), the Blue Knights (19-11, 3-2) won the third (30-22), and the Blue Devils closed out the best-of-five match with a 30-27 victory in game four.

Sophomore Lindsey Drum (Wayland/Wayland-Cohocton) and Martin both collected 11 kills.

Martin led the Devils with 17 digs, Strein had 14 digs, and freshman Paula Baire (Lancaster/Nardin) collected 12. In addition, Drum and junior Kim Schmitz (Derby/Lake Shore) had 11 digs each and Pieczynski chipped in with 10.

Pieczynski had a team-high 31 sets.

The Blue Devils are back in action at noon Staurday against Brockport, and at 2 p.m. against Buffalo State.
