Devils fall to St. Lawrence in overtime

CANTON, N.Y. -- Fredonia State returned to action Thursday with a 70-65 overtime loss to St. Lawrence.

Playing for the first time since Dec. 10, the Blue Devils (6-3) led once during the overtime before dropping the see-saw struggle. The game had 12 ties and numerous lead changes.

Sophomore forward Cheryl Kindzia (Williamsville/Williamsville North) had a double-double -- her fifth of the season -- with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

Sophomore forward Danielle Bleecker (Pittsford/Pittsford-Mendon) added 16 points and junior forward Lisa Gentile (Utica/Whitesboro) had 10 points.

The teams never were separated by more than seven points with Fredonia State leading 26-19 in the first half following a basket by Bleecker, only to be outscored 7-0 for a 26-26 halftime tie.

The Saints (5-5) led 42-35 in the second half.

The Blue Devils rallied to take a a 59-56 lead on two free throws by sophomore forward Michelle Bull (Machias/Pioneer) and one free throw by sophomore guard Maria Scaffidi (Buffalo/Holy Angels), the latter with :23 left in regulation. St. Lawrence's Jamie Wolff sent the game into overtime when she was fouled attemping a trey with :08 left and made all three free throws.

Fredonia State took its final lead, 64-63, with 1:31 left in overtime on a free throw by junior guard Melissa Howlett (Avon/Honeoye Falls-Lima).

The Blue Devils return to action Saturday when they meet Thiel College at 6 p.m. in Steele Hall.
