Furious rally falls short

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State battled back to within three points in the final minute before falling to St. Lawrence, 57-49, in non-conference women's basketball.

Down by 15 early in the second half, the Blue Devils (4-6) whittled the deficit to 50-47 on a three-point play by junior Danielle Bleecker (Pittsford/Pittsford-Mendon) with 58 seconds remaining.

The Saints (10-1), winners of nine straight, salted the game away by making 7 of 8 free throws in the final minute. Four different players were responsible. The Saints were 20 of 26 from the line overall.

Bleecker finished with 17 points and junior Maria Scaffidi (Buffalo/Holy Angels) added 15 points for the Blue Devils, who'll return to SUNYAC action at home next Friday vs. Oswego.

St. Lawrence was led by Jamie Wolff (Buffalo/Nardin) with 18 points and Kimberly Sikule (Westerlo/Berne-Knox-Westerlo) with 12 points. Katie Palmer (Bourne, Mass./Falmouth) grabbed 13 rebounds.
