Kindzia close to 1,000 points as new season begins

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Two-time All SUNYAC forward Cheryl Kindzia (Williamsville/Williamsville North) is the top returning player heading into the start of the 2007-08 women's basketball season at Fredonia State.

Kindzia averaged 14.8 points and 8.3 rebounds per game in 2006-07. She was among the SUNYAC leaders in both categories, which earned her a spot on the all-conference Second Team. She was a First Team choice in 2005-06. Kindzia's three-season totals -- 946 points and 615 rebounds -- place her among Fredonia State's all-time leaders (scoring 6th; rebounding 5th).

Senior guard Maria Scaffidi (Buffalo/Holy Angels) is the other returning starter. She averaged 6.6 points per game as a junior and will enter the team with 58 career three-pointers, within striking distance of making the school's top five list.

Graduation claimed two of the other three starters, point guard Karolyn Baker and small forward Lisa Gentile, while three-time All SUNYAC guard Danielle Bleecker will forgo her senior season.

Other returnees are senior forward Michelle Bull (Machias/Pioneer), junior guard Leisel Renaud (Brooklyn/Humanities Prep), sophomore forward Alexandria Haitz (Batavia/Notre Dame), and sophomore guard Allison Cook (Buffalo/Nichols).

Kindzia, Scaffidi, and Bull are the 2007-08 tri-captains.

Newcomers include junior guard Angela Pucciarelli (Fredonia), a veteran of two seasons at Jamestown Community College, and four freshmen: guard Caroline Hourihan (Buffalo/Nardin Academy), guard Kristina D'Ercole (Buffalo/Nazareth Academy), guard Courtney Kingston (Geneseo), and forward Emily Galus (Hamburg/Frontier).

The Blue Devils open the new season vs. Notre Dame (Ohio) College 1 p.m. Saturday in the Nan Nichols Tournament at The College of Wooster. Consolation and championship games are 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Sunday.
