Devils drop opener to Notre Dame College

WOOSTER, Ohio -- Fredonia State opened its season with an 89-66 loss to Notre Dame (Ohio) College in the first round of the Nan Nichols Tournament at The College of Wooster.

Senior forward Cheryl Kindzia had 27 points and nine rebounds while junior Angela Pucciarelli (Fredonia) added 16 points in her first game as a Blue Devil.

Notre Dame had five players score in double figures, led by Molly Baker with 25. Ashley Carney poured in 22 points off the bench. Notre Dame (3-0) had a 40-9 scoring advantage off the bench.

The Blue Devils led only briefly and by more more than three points early in the first half. They fell behind by 11, only to rally for a 61-61 tie on a basket by Kindzia with 8:34 left. Notre Dame closed the the game by outscoring the Blue Devils 28-5.

Fredonia State will play in the tournament consolation game 1 p.m. Sunday against tournament host Wooster, which fell to Misericordia 65-64 in Saturday's other fist-round game.
