Kindzia carries Devils over Wooster

WOOSTER, Ohio -- Cheryl Kindzia had 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead Fredonia State past host Wooster, 61-55, in the consolation game of the Nan Nichols Tournament.

Kindzia, a senior forward from Williamsville (Williamsville North) also blocked four shots and had five points during a decisive 10-3 Fredonia State run in the second half. Junior forward Angela Pucciarelli (Fredonia) hit a three-point basket, junior guard Leisel Renaud (Brooklyn/Humanities Prep) had a basket and a free throw, and senior forward Michelle Bull (Machias/Pioneer) completed the run with two free throws as the Blue Devils (1-1) turned a 46-46 tie into a 59-49 lead in the final minute.

Pucciarelli finished with 11 points, 12 rebounds, and had four assists while senior guard Maria Scaffidi (Buffalo/Holy Angels) connected for 15 points and had five assists for the Blue Devils, who trailed by 11 points (29-18) late in the first half.

With 994 points as a collegian, Kindzia will attempt to become the fifth woman in program history to reach the 1,000-point milestone when the Blue Devils play their home opener Tuesday vs. D'Youville. Game time is 6 p.m. at the Steele Hall Fieldhouse.
