Tournament Champs

ERIE, Pa. -- The Fredonia State women's basketball team dominated play in the second half to overcome a nine point halftime deficit and claim a 55-45 victory and the Tournament Championship over host Penn State Behrend.

Up 26-17 at the half, Behrend scored the first basket of the second period to take a 28-17 lead. The Devils then took charge with 15 unanswered points, capped off by back-to-back layups by Leisel Renaud (Brookly/Humanities Prep), at the 13:20 mark.

The Devils then went into a full-court press defense, creating steals on three straight Behrend possesions to start the run. The Devils had 13 steals in the second half, and 19 for the game.

They also heated up from the field, shooting 57.7 percent (15-26) in the second frame. They had made only 26.9 percent (7-26) of their field goals in the first half.

Junior forward Cheryl Kindzia (Williamsville/Williamsville North) led the Devils with a 15 points and was named the Tournmanet MVP. Junior guard Maria Scaffidi (Buffalo/Holy Angels) also made the all tournament team. She hit for 10 points, six assists and three steals. Senior forward Lisa Gentile (Utica/Whitesboro) registered her first double-double of the season, collecting 11 points and 10 rebounds. Karolyn Baker (Olean/Olean) had five assists and four steals in a productive game.

Behrend (1-1) was led by Brittany Mays with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Victoria Innes had 14 points.

Fredonia State is now 2-0, and will host D'Youville College at Steele Hall on Tuesday. The Devils will then meet up with Behrend again on Saturday, this time at Steele Hall.
