Grand night for Blue Devil senior

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Cheryl Kindzia became the sixth Fredonia State woman since 1984 to reach the 1,000-point plateau in the Blue Devils' 64-54 home win over D'Youville.

Kindzia, a senior forward from Williamsville (Williamsville North), sank a the front end of a two-shot foul with 3:50 left in the first half to reach the milestone. After a brief timeout for a celebratory photograph, Kindzia returned to the free-throw line and made her second shot to push the Blue Devils (2-1) into a 25-24 lead.

Fredonia State led 31-28 at halftime and pushed its advantage to seven points, 35-28, early in the second half on a layup by junior Leisel Renaud (Brooklyn/Humanities Prep). D'Youville twice cut their deficit to two points, but could never recapture the lead, which had been seven points in the first half.

Kindzia finished with 17 points to push her career total to 1,011. She also grabbed 10 rebounds, collected six steals, and had four assists. Junior guard Angela Pucciarelli (Fredonia) added 13 points, her third double-digit game in as many games, while Renaud added 12 points on 5 of 6 field-goal shooting.

Angel Clark (Lackawanna) led D'Youville (2-1) with 11 points while Holly Beats (Marilla/Iroquouis) added 10 to go along with seven rebounds.

The other Blue Devil women to score 1,000 points, and the years they played, are: Shelly Giardini (1,251; 1991-95), Sarah Adkins (1,227; 1995-99), Debbie Pike (1,209; 1986-90), Clare Crowley (1,133; 2000-03), and Kim Guenther (1,026; 1999-2003).
