Devils turn aside determined D'Youville

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State improved to 3-0 with a 68-64 non-conference home win over D'Youville College.

Senior forward Lisa Gentile (Utica/Whitesboro) scored five points in the final 32 seconds to turn aside the stubborn Spartans (1-2), who trailed by as many as 12 points early in the second half before rallying.

The comeback started with a 9-0 run, which was part of a larger 19-4 run resulting in a 55-52 D'Youville lead with 9:06 remaining. Over the next seven minutes, neither team led by more than two points and were tied twice.

D'Youville sophomore guard Rachel Pagano-Fuller (Greece/Greece Odyssey) gave her team its final lead, 64-63, with an off-balance shot from beyond the arc with 1:23 remaining. The teams traded turnovers before Gentile converted a teammate's missed shot into a rebound basket. She made a free throw to complete a three-point play and give the Blue Devils a 66-64 lead with :32 left.

When D'Youville junior guard Rachel Placito (Greece/Greece Olympia) misfired at the opposite end, Gentile rebounded the miss and was fouled. She made two insurance free throws with :10 to go. D'Youville was unable to get off a shot in its final possession.

Junior forward Cheryl Kindzia (Williamsville/Williamsville North) led the Blue Devils with 17 points and 14 rebounds. She also collected five steals and blocked three shots. Senior guard Karolyn Baker (Olean/Olean) added 15 points, six assists, and five steals while Gentile and junior forward Danielle Bleecker (Pittsford/Pittsford Mendon) had 12 points each.

D'Youville was led by Placito with 23 points, including 4 of 5 from three-point range. Freshman forward Laura Bruzzo (Oceanside/Oceanside) added 16 points on 8 of 13 shooting, while Pagano-Fuller had 12 points.

The Blue Devils return to their home court 4 p.m. Saturday vs. Penn State Behrend.
