Behrend hands Devils loss in OT, 78-66

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Penn State Behrend handed Fredonia State its first loss of the season and avenged a 10-point loss six days earlier with a 78-66 overtime win Saturday at the Steele Hall Fieldhouse.

Brittany Mays (Knox, Pa.) had 20 points and Julia Andrus (Corry, Pa.) added 18 to lead Penn State Behrend (2-1). They were a combined 14 of 28 from the field -- Mays 7 of 15, Andrus 7 of 13.

Senior guard Karolyn Baker (Olean/Olean) led Fredonia State with 21 points. She was 8 of 10 from the field, and 3 of 3 from three-point range. In addition, she had nine assists to tie her career high with the Blue Devils (3-1).

Junior forward Cheryl Kindzia (Williamsville/Williamsville North) added 16 points -- 14 of them in the second half -- and grabbed 11 rebounds. She also had three steals and blocked three shots. Junior guard Maria Scaffidi (Buffalo/Holy Angels) added 12 points, six rebounds, and three steals.

The Blue Devils' final lead of the game, 66-65, was the result of a basket by Kindzia in the first minute of the overtime. Penn State Behrend rattled off the remaining 13 points, including consecutive baskets by Andrus and a basket and two free throws by Kayla O'Connor (Erie, Pa.). Natalie Engel (McDonald, Pa.) closed out the scoring with five straight points.

Fredonia State won the previous meeting last Sunday, 55-45, in the championship game of the Penn State Behrned Tournament. The Blue Devils now turn to the SUNYAC portion of their schedule Tuesday at Brockport, the first of three straight conference road games.
