Cortland cruises over Blue Devils

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State hung tough for most of the first half Friday against defending SUNYAC champion Cortland.

The Red Dragons (3-0, 1-0 SUNYAC) put together a late run before halftime and carried it into the start of the second half en route a 73-48 victory.

With senior guard Maria Scaffidi (Buffalo/Holy Angels) leading the way, the Blue Devils (2-3, 0-1 SUNYAC) were as close as two possessions as late as 4:55 in the first half. That's when Scaffidi'd driving basket, two of her her 10 points in the first half, cut the Blue Devil deficit to 19-13.

Cortland's Jessica Laing (Bloomville) led a 9-3 with a field goal and four free throws to close out the first half, which ended with the Red Dragons leading 28-16. They added to their lead at the start of the second half and never looked back.

Laing finished with a game-high 22 points, four short of her SUNYAC-leading 26.0 average, while Sara Cavanaugh (Hastings-on-Hudson) added 17 points.

For Fredonia State, Scaffidi finished with 13 points, three assists, and three steals; senior forward Cheryl Kindzia (Williamsville/Williamsville North) added 12 points, and sophomore forward Alexandria Haitz (Batavia/Notre Dame) had 10.
