Cortland runs down Devils

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Cortland put together a couple decisive runs to turn aside a stubborn effort by Fredonia State, 72-59, in SUNYAC women's action.

Sophomore forward Cheryl Kindzia (Williamsville/Williamsville North) had 20 points and 12 rebounds for the Blue Devils (3-2, 1-1 SUNYAC). Sophomore forward Danielle Bleecker (Pittsford/Pittsford-Mendon) added 13 points while junior forward Lisa Gentile (Utica/Whiteboro) had 12 points and seven rebounds.

Cortland led by as many as 17 points on a strength of a 13-5 run late in the game. Otherwise, the Blue Devils hung around, and pulled within seven points, 59-52 with 5:39 left, on two straight baskets by freshman guard Leisel Renaud (Brooklyn/Humanities Prep). The Blue Devils missed a shot that would cut their deficit to five points and the Red Dragons (4-1, 2-0) assumed control.

Fredonia State led in the first half by as many as five points, but trailed at the half, 32-28, when Cortland's Sarah Cavanaugh hit a three-point basket at the buzzer.

The Blue Devils travel to Oneonta for a 2 p.m. game Saturday.
