Devils prevail at Nazareth to end skid

ROCHESTER , N.Y. -- Fredonia State's Lisa Gentile (Utica/Whitesboro) had a game-high 23 points Thursday as the Blue Devils ended a four-game losing streak by defeating host Nazareth in non-conference women's basketball, 65-61.

Nazareth (2-3) led 48-42 following a pair of free throws by Ali Sharpe with 9:39 left in the game. The Blue Devils (4-4), however, rattled off the next 11 points -- nine by Gentile -- to take a 53-48 lead.

Nazareth came back to tie the score 59-59 on a free throw by Whitney Smith with 1:31 to play, but the Blue Devils' Cheryl Kindzia (Williamsville/Williamsville North) made two free throws with :54 to play to put the Blue Devils on top to stay, 61-59.

For insurance, Karolyn Baker (Olean/Olean) added a free throw with :27 left, Danielle Bleecker (Pittsford/Pittsford-Mendon) another free throw with :10, and Maria Scaffidi (Buffalo/Holy Angels) salted the game away with a steal and two free throws with :06 to go.

Gentile's 23 points came on 9 for 12 shooting from the field, with a pair of three-pointers. She also grabbed eight rebounds. Kindzia finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds and Bleecker added 13 points.

The Blue Devils close out the first semester Saturday at Rochester Institute of Technology (6:30 p.m.).
