Balanced scoring carries Devils over Nazareth

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State used a balanced offense to down Nazareth, 71-54, in a non-conference game Thursday at Steele Hall.

Sophomore forward Danielle Bleecker (Pittsford/Pittsford-Mondon) had 20 points, 17 in the first half, to lead the Blue Devils (5-2), who had four other players score in double figures.

Sophomore forward Cheryl Kindzia (Williamsville/Williamsville South) added 15 points and 17 rebounds. It was her fourth double-double of the season.

In addition, junior guard Karolyn Baker (Olean/Olean) added 12 points and a team-high five assists, junior forward Lisa Gentile (Utica/Whitesboro) had 11 points and seven rebounds, and sophomore guard Maria Scaffidi (Buffalo/Holy Angels) had 10 points and four assists.

For Nazareth (3-3), freshman Lizzie Barlow (Cazanovia/Cazenovia) and freshman Sarah Hinman (Shenendehowa/Clifton Park) led with 13 points each.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair of six lead changes and three ties. A jumper by Scaffidi resulted in a 26-24 Fredonia State lead and was the start of a half-closing 9-2 run by the Blue Devils, who led 33-26 at intermission.

The second half was all Fredonia State as the hosts opened a lead as large as 24 points, 67-43, on a driving layup by Baker with 3:13 remaining.

The Blue Devils close out the first semester of games when they play host to Rochester Institute of Technology at 6 p.m. Saturday. The Fredonia State men meet Penn State-Behrend in the second game of the doubleheader that night.
