Devils fall behind early, late rally falls short at SUNYIT

UTICA -- The Fredonia State women’s basketball team dropped a SUNYAC road contest, 65-53, at SUNYIT on Saturday.

The Devils’ cold shooting in the first half put them in a hole they could not climb out. They shot 10 of 34 (29.4 percent) from the field and would trail 42-26 at the break.

An Angela Pucciarelli (Fredonia) layup and Michelle Bull (Orchard Park) free throw were all the offense the Devils would muster through the first 9:00 of the game. SUNYIT built its biggest lead of the game, 23-3, at that point.

The Devils would slowly chip away, pulling within three points, 52-49, with just over 6:00 remaining in the game after consecutive free throws by Cheryl Kindzia (Williamsville/Williamsville North). The Wildcat defense would again clamp down, allowing the Devils to score four points the remainder of the game.

Kindzia scored 21 points, grabbed nine rebounds and added six blocks to lead the Devils. Maria Scaffidi (Buffalo/Holy Angels) added 18 points, including four three-point field goals.

SUNYIT (4-2, 1-1 SUNYAC) was paced by Annmarie Spalding with 25 points. Jennifer Vergis chipped in 16.

The Devils (2-4, 0-2) are slated to play a non-conference tilt at Hilbert on Wed., Dec. 12.
