Devils deal Cortland its only league loss

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State tied a school record for wins in a season and ruined Cortland's bid for an unbeaten league record in the regular season in the process.

Sophomore guard Maria Scaffidi (Buffalo/Holy Angels) led a trio of players in double figures as the Blue Devils (16-8, 11-5 SUNYAC) upset the Red Dragons (21-3, 15-1 SUNYAC) Saturday at Steele Hall, 60-54.

Scaffidi finished with 21 points, 14 of them in the second half, while sophomore guard Cheryl Kindzia (Williamsville/Williamsville North) added 16 points and eight rebounds.

Sophomore Danielle Bleecker (Pittsford/Pittsford-Mendon) was the third Blue Devil in double figures with 12 points.

Kaylin VanDusen (Schuyler/West Canada Valley) led Cortland with 21 points. Megan Assmus (Syosset/Syosset) added 16 and Dani Maye (Kirkwood/Windsor) added 10.

Fredonia State led 30-21 at halftime and expanded its lead to 35-21 on a basket by Scaffidi three minutes into the second half. Cortland got as close as two points, 48-46, on a three-point play by Maye with 5:19 remaining.

Scaffidi put the game out of reach with a 15-footer from the left corner, followed by a driving lay-up, for a 58-50 Blue Devil lead with 1:19 left.

The 1991-92 team posted a 16-13 record, which stood as the most wins in a single season. Furthermore, the Blue Devils defeated Cortland for the second straight season, and improved to 10-1 at home during the 2005-06 season.

Both teams are bound for the SUNYAC Tournament and first-round games Tuesday. The Blue Devils will meet either Geneseo or Oneonta.
