Geneseo outlasts Devils in playoffs

GENESEO, N.Y. -- Fredonia State ran out of steam in its bid to rally for a SUNYAC Tournament first-round win at Geneseo.

The Blue Devils (16-9) trailed by double-digits before rallying to within two points, 49-47, with 8:22 left in the game.

Foul trouble and the extra energy expended to get back into the game resulted in Fredonia State's comeback bid falling short and Geneseo pulling away, 63-51.

Fredonia State fell to 0-8 in games when they have allowed 60 points or more.

Sophomore Cheryl Kindzia (Williamsville/Williamsville North) led Fredonia State with 22 points and 15 rebounds.

Annie Verdino led Geneseo with 34 points, 23 in the first half.

The Blue Devils led by as many as seven points before the Blue Knights (17-9) took its first lead, 28-27, with 1:05 left in the first half.

The Blue Knights led the rest of the way. They move on to meet Cortland in the SUNYAC semifinals Friday at Utica.

Fredonia State will await to hear whether its bid for an ECAC Upstate Tournament berth is awarded. The bids are expected to come out over the weekend.
