Sophomore forward Cheryl Kindzia (Williamsville/Williamsville North) had 25 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Blue Devils (12-7, 7-5) over a team ahead of them in the SUNYAC standings. Fredonia State maintained its No. 5 seeding in the conference standings. Sophomore guard Danielle Bleecker (Pittsford/Pittsford-Mendon) also had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Junior guard Lisa Gentile (Utica/Whitesboro) added 11 points. For the Red Dragons (14-5, 8-3 SUNYAC), Shannon Weir (Oneonta/Milford) had 14 points and nine rebounds. Junior swingman Melissa Donohue (Niverville/Ichabod Crane) added 10 points. The loss ended the Red Dragons' six-game winning streak. It was also their first loss on the road to a SUNYAC opponent. Fredonia State, 8-1 at home, took an early lead and led 26-20 at halftime while Oneonta struggled with its shooting (6 of 39, 15.4 percent) in the first half. The Blue Devils grabbed 34 while Kindzia nearly recording a double-double in the first 20 minutes: 12 points and 9 rebounds. The Blue Devils opened a 32-20 lead to start the second half and maintained leads of no fewer than seven points before Oneonta made a comeback. A short jumper by Donohue with 35.1 seconds left would be as close the Red Dragons would get, 50-48. Sophomore guard Maria Scaffidi (Buffalo/Holy Angels) made both ends of a 1-and-1 with 25.4 seconds, followed by an unforced Oneonta turnover on the insuing inbound pass. One free throw each by Gentile and sophomore guard Karolyn Baker (Olean/Olean) provided insurance points. The Blue Devils have a week off before their next game: Feb. 10 at Plattsburgh.
