Devils turn back Bengals

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State turned back Buffalo State, 66-59, in SUNYAC women's basketball Saturday at Steele Hall.

Down 48-47 midway through the second half, the Blue Devils (7-12, 2-9) closed the game out with a 28-10 run. Junior guard Angela Pucciarelli (Fredonia) had seven of her game-high 19 points during the run.

Senior guard Maria Scaffidi (Buffalo/Holy Angels) had four points and two assists down the stretch. She finished with 14 points and a team-high four steals. Senior forward Cheryl Kindzia (Williamsville/Williamsville North) added 12 points and nine rebounds, and senior forward Michelle Bull (Machias/Pioneer) had nine points and 12 rebounds.

For Buffalo State, senior guard Toya Parks (Brooklyn/Martin Luther King) had a game-high 20 points -- 15 in the first half -- and a game-high 11 rebounds. She also collected four steals. Junior center-forward Shareese Hamer (Erie, Pa./Strong Vincent) added 12 points. Freshman guard Barb Kiliszek (Depew/Lancaster) had six steals and four assists.

Down by 13 points early in the second half, the Bengals (7-13, 3-8 SUNYAC) went on a 15-3 run and took a 49-47 lead on a three-point play by freshman forward Dalkeithia Layne (Brooklyn/East N.Y. Family). After the teams traded baskets, the Blue Devils took the lead for good on a jumper by senior Carolyn Hourihan (Buffalo/Nardin Academy).

Fredonia State has off until Feb. 15 when it visits Geneseo, the first of five remaining SUNYAC games. The regular season closes Feb. 19 when the Blue Devils and Bengals meet against, this time at Buffalo State.
