Second-half surge carries Oswego over Devils

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Oswego remained unbeaten and atop the SUNYAC with a 69-47 home win Friday over Fredonia State.

The Lakers (10-0, 4-0) went on a 23-4 run early in the second half, starting with back-to-back three-point baskets by Sally Shuster. In the process, Shuster tied and then broke the Oswego school record for career treys (183).

For the Blue Devils (7-4, 2-2), sophomore Jill Ratchuk (Buffalo/Mt. Mercy) had a game-high 18 points. Senior Amanda Neamon (Arcade/Pioneer) chipped in with nine points and grabbed eight rebounds. Senior Katie Estes (Olean/Olean) also had eight boards.

Fredonia State never led in the game, fell behind 13-3 in the first half, and rallied back to within two points, 17-15, two straight three-point baskets by sophomore Lisa Gentile (Utica/Whitesboro).

Down 26-19 at halftime, the Blue Devils trimmed their deficit to three points, 26-23, on two free throws by Neamon, but saw their chance at an upset evaporate over the next eight minutes of the second half.

Fredonia State meets Cortland at 2 p.m. Saturday.
