Balanced attack does in Behrend

FREDONIA, N.Y. – Fredonia State used a balanced offensive attack to down Penn State Behrend for the first time in 10 seasons.

Senior Amanda Neamon (Arcade/Pioneer) had 17 points and senior Katie Estes (Olean/Olean) had 16 in the 66-56 non-conference home win by the Blue Devils (5-2).

In addition, sophomore Jill Ratchuk (Buffalo/Mt. Mercy) added 13 points and Karolyn Baker (Olean/Olean) chipped in with 11.

Brittany Mays (Knox/Keystone) led the Lions (3-3) with 15 points. Rachel Slomski (Erie/McDowell) had 10.

Fredonia State defeated Behrend for only the third time in 21 meetings and the first time since the 1994-95 campaign. The Lions had won the previous eight meetings between the teams.

The Blue Devils, up 26-19 at halftime, opened an 18-point lead early in the second half. They shot 56.5 percent (13 of 23) in the second half, with Neamon and Estes each connecting on 4 of 6 shots.

The Blue Devils also had a 32-25 rebounding advantage as Estes grabbed nine and Neamon eight. Estes also was credited with four assists while Baker had four steals.

The same two teams could meet again this weekend in Behrned's Winter Classic tournament, but not before facing first-round opponents Friday: the Blue Devils vs. Westminister, the Lions vs. RIT.
