Devil rally falls short

FREDONIA, N.Y. – A first-half scoring drought was Fredonia State's undoing Saturday in a 54-52 SUNYAC home loss to Oneonta.

The Blue Devils (4-2, 2-1) went over eight minutes without a basket and fell behind 28-16 at halftime. They went down by 14 points (30-14) early in the second half, only to chip away at the deficit -- several times getting within two points, only to have the Red Dragons (4-1, 2-1) counter with a basket.

Fredonia State closed to within one point, 53-52, on a three-point basket by sophomore Melissa Howlett (Avon/Honeoye Falls-Lima) with :08 remaining.

Following a free throw by Oneonta's Gabrielle Doemel (Latham), the Blue Devils tried one last desperation shot from midcourt. It was wide right.

Ann Marie Faia (Yonkers) led Oneonta with 16 points and Noreen McNaughton (Mineola) had 14.

For the Blue Devils, senior Amanda Neamon (Arcade/Pioneer) and freshman Danielle Bleecker (Pittsford/Pittsford-Mendon) had 11 points each. Senior Katie Estes (Olean/Olean) grabbed 11 rebounds.

The Blue Devils are done playing SUNYAC teams until the second semester. They have three non-conference games in the coming week starting at home Tuesday (7 p.m.) against Penn State Behrend.
