Fredonia State lands three SUNYAC post-season awards

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State landed three major SUNYAC awards in women's lacrosse following a record-setting 2008 season.

Head coach Chris Case was chosen Coach of the Year, sophomore defender Emily Reichert (Henrietta/Rush-Henrietta) as Co-Player of the Year, and freshman midfielder Kelsey Lamb (Niskayuna) the Rookie of the Year in a vote of conference coaches. It is the first time in program history a Fredonia State representative has been chosen for any of the SUNYAC awards.

In addition, Reichert was joined by senior attacker Christie Zaganiaczyk (Lancaster) on the All SUNYAC First Team, while Lamb and senior defender Janelle Giehl (Rochester/Irondequoit) were Second Team selections.

Case guided the Blue Devils to an 11-6 season -- setting a new school record for wins in a season -- and a 4-4 SUNYAC mark resulting in the program's first-ever appearance in the SUNYAC Tournament. In six seasons as head coach, his teams have posted an overall record of 46-41 -- including 27-19 over the past three seasons. Also the head coach of women's soccer, Case was selected SUNYAC Coach of the Year in that sport following the 2003 seasons. He is the third Fredonia State head coach to be honored by the SUNYAC this school year, preceded by P.J. Gondek (men's soccer) and Geoff Braun (women's volleyball).

In 17 games this season, Reichert had 14 goals and 17 assists to finish fifth on the team in scoring. She led the team with 42 draw controls, 73 groundballs, and 50 caused turnovers. Her per-game averages in the last two categories led the SUNYAC heading into the final week of the regular season (final stats will be posted later this week). In addition to being named First Team All SUNYAC last season, Reichert was also named First Team All Region and was one of 12 players selected to the national All-Rookie team. She was also named to the 2008 SUNYAC All-Tournament team.

Lamb burst onto the scene with 28 goals -- second on the team -- and 32 points, fourth on the team. She also tied for second on the team with 44 groundballs and 26 caused turnovers.

A Second Team selection in 2007, Zaganiaczyk moves up to First Team following a senior season which saw her score 43 goals, including three game-winners, and lead the Blue Devils with 50 points. Her 114 goals and 128 points rank second all-time in each statistical category. Like Reichert, she was named to the 2008 SUNYAC All-Tournament team. Giehl, a team captain for two seasons, was second on the team in three categories: 44 groundballs, 30 draw controls, and 26 caused turnovers.
