Blue Devils cage Bears with second-half outburst

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State scored four second-half goals to pull away from Potsdam for a 5-0 SUNYAC home win.

The Blue Devils (6-6-3, 3-3-3 SUNYAC) had eight different players figure into the scoring, while junior goalkeeper Becky Scroger (Spencerport) recorded her sixth shutout of the season -- and second in two days -- without having to make a save. Scroger's 19 career shutouts is a school record.

Fredonia State grabbed a 1-0 lead as sophomore Lauren Heiweil (Binghamton/Chenango Forks) scored her fifth goal of the season at 8:18 on a cross from freshman Jessica Loretz (Endwell/Maine-Endwell).

Potsdam put forth a strong defensive effort to stay within one goal of the lead, only to have the Blue Devils break the game open with goals in the 59th, 71st, 80th, and 83rd minutes.

Freshman midfielder Christa Morgante (East Amherst/Williamsville East) started the onslaught with her first collegiate goal following a right-wing run and cross by Heilweil. Jacki Borcyk (Rochester/Greece Odyssey), a junior, made it 3-0, Fredonia State, when she lobbed a ball over the goalkeeper from the right wing. A one-timer from 35 yards out by senior Danielle Bleecker (Pittsford/Pittsford-Mendon) made it 4-0, assisted by junior Kaelyn Puidokas (Rochester/Aquinas Institute); and freshman Julie LaPolla (Penfield) completed the scoring when she converted on a deflected cross from junior Mimi Blackman (Pittsford/Pittsford-Mendon).

For Bleecker, it was her sixth of the season and 13th in four seasons. Her 31 total points over four years is tied for ninth on the Fredonia State all-time scoring list.

The Bears (7-8-1, 2-6-1 SUNYAC) were outshot 23-2, and both shots missed the mark. Meanwhile, sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Casey (Potsdam) was credited with seven saves.

With the victory, the Blue Devils remained in the running for the sixth and final SUNYAC playoff. One of the teams they are fighting with for the spot, Buffalo State, visits campus for a Wednesday game under the University Stadium lights (6 p.m.).
